Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose
The functional properties depend on the degree of substitution of the cellulose structure as well as the chain length of the cellulose backbone structure and the degree of clustering of the carboxymethyl substituents. Viscous aqueous solutions of Na CMC are used to suspend powders intended for either topical application or oral and parenteral administration. It is also used as a tablet binder and disintegrant, and to stabilize emulsions.

Calicium Carboxymethyl Cellulose
Ca CMC is used as suspending or viscosity-increasing agent in oral and topical pharmaceutical formulations. It is also used in modern wound dressings for its water absorption, retention and hemostatic properties. As it is is insoluble in water, it is an effective tablet disintegrant as it swells to several times its original bulk on contact with water.
